Android 4.4.3 coming to Verizon's HTC One (M8) on Wednesday; includes Extreme Power Saving Mode

Last month, two HTC executives (Mo Versi and Jason Mackenzie) said that the Verizon version of the HTC One (M8) would finally receive the Android 4.4.3 update in early September. Well, we have some good news for Big Red customers totin' HTC's flagship handset. A tweet from Mo Versi sent on Monday, reveals that the long awaited update will finally start rolling out on Wednesday.

The Android 4.4.3 update for Verizon's variant of the HTC One (M8) should be the phone's last before Android L. That is because HTC took the security updates from Android 4.4.4 and added them to the Android 4.4.3 update. Improvements will be seen for BoomSound, Quick Settings and the Motion Launcher. Other enhancements will be available for the Camera, Settings, Gallery and HTC Sync manager.

But the most exciting part of the update, something that Verizon customers with the HTC One (M8) have been waiting for, is the Extreme Power Savings Mode. This is a setting that halts all essential operations, limiting the device to making and taking calls, sending and receiving texts, and looking at emails manually. By doing this, you will be able to let each 1% of battery life last for three hours. That means you could keep your phone running for 24 hours with just 8% of battery life remaining.

The update will be going out OTA, so if you own the HTC One (M8) from Verizon, keep your eyes peeled for the notification that the update has arrived, starting on Wednesday.

HTC offers 100 GB of free Google Drive storage space on 5 Android smartphones

HTC today announced that owners of select Android handsets are now eligible for 100 GB of free storage space on Google Drive. The handsets we’re talking about are the HTC One (M8) flagship, the HTC Desire 816, HTC Desire 610, HTC One Remix, and the relatively old HTC One max. As with HTC’s previous offering (which included 50 GB of free storage
space for these devices), the new one is good for 2 years from the date you redeem it.

We’re surprised not to see the HTC One mini 2 on the list above - since the One Remix is basically a renamed One mini 2 for Verizon. Also, the One (E8) probably deserved to be there as well. Anyway, in case you already redeemed your free Google Drive storage space on your HTC handset prior to this new offer, it doesn’t look like you can upgrade to 100 GB. If you didn’t redeem it, you can do so after launching the Google Drive app that’s pre-loaded on your smartphone.

As you may know, Google offers 15 GB of free Drive storage space to all Android users, and asks $1.99 for 100 GB per month - so HTC theoretically enables you to save $47.76 in two years (assuming you have an eligible handset).

Opera Mini beta available now for Windows Phone users

Back in August of 2013, Opera hinted that it was working on a version of an Opera browser for Windows Phone. At the time, the company said it would announce when it had the browser ready. We are happy to tell you that Opera Mini  is now available for Windows Phone users willing to test a beta version of the browser. Click on the sourcelink to send your email address to Opera, so that the company can send you a link to enable you to download the app.

Over 300 million people use Opera Mini worldwide, a number that surely will rise once the browser has the beta tag removed, and becomes available for Windows Phone. By compressing data in the background, Opera Mini uses as much as 90% less data than other browsers, allowing you to conserve your precious data for other things. Besides saving data, Opera Mini also includes tabbed browsing, themes, and other features.

The Opera Mini app is already available for Android and iOS, and is free on both platforms. It is also available for most featurephones as well. And it will apparently be ready soon for Windows Phone. One good thing about joining the beta testers is that it enables you to have your comments and opinions read by the developers, while there is still time to make your comments count..

PayPal's two-factor authentication is easily beaten

A security feature offered by PayPal to help prevent accounts from being taken over by hackers can be easily circumvented, an Australian security researcher has found. PayPal users can elect to receive a six-digit passcode via text message in order to access their accounts. The number is entered after a username and password is submitted. The security feature, known as two-factor authentication, is an option on many online services such as Google and mandatory on many financial services websites for certain kinds of high-risk transactions. Since the code is sent offline or generated by a mobile application, it is much more difficult for hackers to intercept although by no means impossible.

Biggest iPad Air 2 leak yet shows a remarkably thin design and Touch ID

Apple's upcoming iPad Air 2, or whatever they decide to call it, already leaked a few times, but now its chassis is out in full glory, and gets compared with the current king of the iOS tablet range.
At first brush, the biggest difference between the two is the rumored inclusion of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor in Apple's tablets for the first time, which is pretty evident in the iPad Air 2

Volunteer to test a tablet-friendly version of Office for Android

Well looks like a version of Microsoft's Office specifically tailored for Android tablets is on the way. While we still wait for a touch-friendly version of the productivity suite for Windows, word on the street is users will soon be able to beta test a build for Google's tablet OS. According to the Verge's sources both companies and individuals should be able to sign up for access to pre-release versions of Office soon. Obviously we're still waiting for a lot of details, but it's expected that a finger-friendly interface (similar to that found on the iPad) is going to hit Android later this year. But Windows will have to wait until early 2015. While it's slightly surprising to see Microsoft's bread and butter productivity hit a competitors OS first, it highlights Satya Nadella's decision to build Redmond's future on the cloud and cross-platform accessibility. Rather than focusing solely on Windows. SOURCE: Engadget

Facebook Inc wants its users in India to hang up on advertisers. The Internet social networking company is testing a new type of ad in the country that allows mobile phone users to click a button that calls a brand advertiser, immediately hangs up and then receives a return call. The return call delivers pre-recorded audio messages about everything from sponsored cricket scores to information about shopping discounts, minimizing data charges for the user.
The so-called “missed call” ad was specially created by Facebook to appeal to users in the world’s second-most populous country, and potentially in other emerging markets. Facebook has more than

Solar-powered roads: Coming to a highway near you?

As a kid growing up in the mid-1960s, Scott Brusaw would spend hours setting up miniature speedways on the living room carpet so that he could race his favorite slot cars up and down the electric tracks. 'I thought that if they made real roads electric, then us kids could drive,' recalls Brusaw, who grew to become an electrical engineer. 'That thought stuck with me my entire life.' Fast forward to mid-2000s, with the debate over global warming in full swing, Brusaw's wife Julie asked him whether he could build the electric roads he'd concocted as a child out of solar panels. Brusaw initially laughed off the idea -- but not for long.
With an airplane's black box in mind, the couple started mulling over the possibility of creating a solar powered super-strong case that could house sensitive electronics. They explored the idea of
